When I was in school, a skill to write was demanded from us. It didn’t come from inside. And we were getting reprimanded on the premise that a ‘good essay’ was something objective that the teacher knew, and we didn’t. Only when I became interested into it myself, I started to gain some skill.
Perhaps they struggle to write due to being poor readers overall, and don’t have as great a command of language as they need. Just an observation as a former English teacher.

I think I can relate, writing was never my strong suite either as a younger person
